"EMBERA CULTURAL TREASURE - A JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF PANAMA."

DAY TRIP FOR CRUISE GUESTS (AIDA, MEIN SCHIFF, MSC and others)

T4: Authentic Embera people at Lake Alajuela and the Panama Canal

We offer our day tours in smaller groups, specially tailored for German or also english speaking cruise ship guests.

Experience an authentic Panama, far away from the usual tourist trails! On this exclusive day tour, specially designed for cruise guests, our focus is entirely on the fascinating culture of the Embera, one of Panama's indigenous peoples, nestled in the breathtaking natural scenery of Lake Alajuela.

Our journey begins comfortably right at the cruise terminal. From there, we travel in our air-conditioned bus through Panama's rural hinterland, where you can enjoy the passing landscapes—small villages, lush vegetation, and glimpses into the everyday life of Panamanians off the main roads. Our destination is the picturesque Lake Alajuela, an important part of the water reservoir for the Panama Canal and a gateway to another world.

Here, we transfer into traditional dugout canoes, also known as "pirogues." While our experienced Embera boatmen let us glide gently over the water, you can soak in the impressive lake landscape and the impressions of the jungle. Keep an eye out for birds and other native wildlife! After a relaxing boat ride, we reach the Embera village. You will be warmly welcomed by the community and gain a deep insight into their way of life, customs, and centuries-old traditions. Explore the village with its typical stilt houses and learn more about the Embera's close connection to nature, their craftsmanship, and their social structure.

A highlight of the visit is the traditional dances and music with which the Embera express their culture. Let yourself be enchanted by the rhythms and colors! In addition, a delicious, traditional lunch awaits you, freshly prepared by the villagers—usually consisting of fish with plantains (patacones) and local fruits.

You also have some free time to spend as you wish, where you are welcome to jump into the cool water of the shallow riverbed (so feel free to pack your swimwear!), or use the time to admire the Embera's handicrafts and perhaps purchase a unique souvenir directly from the artists—ranging from artfully woven baskets and detailed masks to fine carvings made from Tagua nuts ("vegetable ivory"). Those who wish can also get a temporary tattoo painted with natural Jagua ink.

After this intensive cultural exchange and full of unforgettable impressions, we begin our return journey—setting a course for the second major highlight of the tour: the Panama Canal!

Back in Colón, we cross the 75-meter-high and nearly 3-km-long Atlantic Bridge. From here, you have a wonderful view of both lock systems: the new Agua Clara locks as well as the historic Gatun locks, which we will also visit. Arriving at Gatun, we can watch the famous silver towing and stabilizing locomotives (also called "mulas") at work, holding the ships steady in the chambers during their transit through the locks.

With the impression of the modern 8th Wonder of the World in your luggage, we guarantee to bring you back to your ship on time and with plenty of buffer time.
