"A fusion of history and modernity with fascinating flora and fauna."
DAY TRIP FOR CRUISE GUESTS (AIDA, MEIN SCHIFF, MSC and others)
T3: Panama Canal, San Lorenzo World Heritage Site , Natural World
We offer our day tours in smaller groups, specially tailored for German- or English-speaking cruise ship guests.
With our brand new San Lorenzo and Panama Canal Tour (T3), we have added another diverse and very family-friendly tour option to our program. An exciting mix of technology, history, and impressive nature, coupled with shorter travel distances and thus a shorter overall duration, awaits you!
You will be picked up directly inside the port area of Colon2000. Afterwards, we drive out of Colon, and our first stop is directly at the Agua Clara Visitor Center at the Panama Canal, where you can marvel at the largest lock system in the world. Here, you can watch how ocean giants are lifted between sea level and Gatun Lake (Panama Canal), which is located about 27 meters higher!
After crossing the gigantic Atlantic Bridge (75 meters above sea level), which offers another spectacular view of the Atlantic as well as the two lock systems of Agua Clara and Gatun, we will also plan a short photo stop at the Gatun locks, which opened in 1914!
Surrounded by tropical rainforest, we now head to our next major itinerary point, the historic Fort San Lorenzo, about 20 km away, which is considered one of the oldest colonial fortresses in the Americas and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980.
Located right at the mouth of the still-important Rio Chagres (the main water source for the Panama Canal), this historic structure is nestled in impressive nature. Built on a 24-meter-high rock, the fortress always played a significant role throughout the centuries of Spanish occupation in the Spaniards' defense against attacks by English admirals, privateers, and pirates, such as Francis Drake or the famous Henry Morgan.
In addition to the historical highlight with its beautiful view, the lush natural world invites us to explore it during an approximately 45-minute walk. With a little luck, you can observe howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, sloths, or even coatis from close up here in the adjacent tropical rainforest.
A small picnic with a tasting of some typical local snacks ensures you won't miss out on Panama's culinary delights, and rounds off our exploration tour around the colonial fortress of San Lorenzo, along with various refreshing drinks.
Afterwards, it's back to Colon, where we will bring you back to your ship safely, punctually, and on time after an approximately 30-minute bus ride! Various duty-free shops, a supermarket, and a few restaurants offer you an individual shopping opportunity here before you reboard!
The excursion has a total duration of approx. 6 hours, with the tour time optimally adjusted to your docking times as well as the transit times of the ships at the Panama Canal, ensuring you get the very best out of your day in Panama!
